The origins of chess trace back to the game of Chaturanga. During the Arab Caliphate, this game became popular under the name Shatranj. Valuable information regarding chess games has been preserved due to the introduction of chess notation by the Arabs. Today, there are many enthusiasts of this game.

An open championship for the “Rector’s Cup” in chess was held between professors and students in Andijan State Medical Institute’s students’ hostel. The rector of the Institute M. Madazimov and the first vice-rector for Youth Affairs and Spiritual-Educational Work S. Salohiddinov participated in the event.

“Chess broadens a person’s worldview and teaches them to think, remember, compare, foresee the future, and draw conclusions. Additionally, playing chess develops attention, determination, willpower, self-criticism, and the ability to draw independent conclusions. I believe today’s participants are among the best in their studies and work, as winning in this sport truly requires talent and potential,” said the rector as he opened the competition.

Following that, the games commenced. All participants earnestly moved their pieces to checkmate their opponents. After intense matches, winners were determined among professors and students.
