The Population Census of Uzbekistan in 2023 is the first general population census in the history of independent Uzbekistan, which is scheduled to be held from November 1 to November 25, 2023. Uzbekistan has not conducted a census since 1989, when the USSR conducted the last population census in its history.
According to UN standards, a population census in each country should take place every 10 years. Based on these standards, Uzbekistan was supposed to conduct the next census in 1999, but the census was not organized.
At the end of 2017, the chairman of the State Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan, BahodirBegalov, said that the country was ready to conduct a population census in 2020. On February 5, 2019, President of Uzbekistan ShavkatMirziyoyev approved by decree the concept of conducting a population census in 2022.
On March 16, 2020, President of Uzbekistan ShavkatMirziyoyev signed the law “On the Population Census”, which regulates the procedure for conducting the census, its goals and objectives. On August 24, 2020, it was announced that the census will be held from November 1 to November 25, 2022, and a trial census is scheduled for 2021 on the same days. In order to facilitate the conduct of the population census, it was decided that from August 1, 2021 to December 1, 2022, the change in the administrative-territorial division of the republic, as well as the renaming of toponymic objects, will cease.
On November 11, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the population census was postponed to 2023 according to Cabinet Resolution No. 710.
A trial population census is planned to be conducted in the Khojaabad district of Andijan region, YukoriChirchik district of Tashkent region, Khiva city of Khorezm region and Yashnabad district of Tashkent.
