At the briefing in Geneva, Director-General of the World Health Organization Tedros Ghebreyesus said, that 172 countries have joined the COVAX international mechanism to develop and distribute coronavirus vaccines. There are currently 9 coronavirus vaccines in the WHO portfolio.
Another piece of news is that Uzbekistan, as an active member of WHO and its Regional Office for Europe, has also joined the coronavirus vaccination program. The organization is reported to work with all vaccine manufacturers. This mechanism aims to ensure equal access to licensed and approved vaccines for all member countries.
For your information, Uzbekistan is one of the 53 Member States of the WHO Regional Office for Europe and conducts multilateral cooperation with this organization. It should be noted that Dr. Hans Kluge, who was elected its director at the 69th session of the organization, began his first official foreign visit from Uzbekistan. He visited our country on February 10, 2020.
Also on May 20, 2019, at the 72nd session of the World Health Assembly, which is the supreme body of WHO, the Minister of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan Alisher Shadmanov was elected Vice-President of the World Health Assembly from the WHO European Region.
This large-scale collaboration also covered the fight against coronavirus. Currently, representatives of the WHO Regional Office for Europe Oleg Storozhenko and Tanya Schmid are in our country and are directly involved in the treatment of patients with COVID-19.
